Soca, zouk, konpa, hip-hop and African sounds fill the stage. 'SOUNDS' celebrates the music that the Afro-Caribbean communities have carried for generations. Rhythms that people brought with them across oceans, that brought joy in difficult times and that still connect us today. Choreographer Donna Chittick shows how music is more than sound: it is memory, identity and resilience in motion.

Donna Chittick grew up surrounded by music on Sint Maarten. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to the sounds of her youth: soca, zouk, R&B, hip-hop and Latin. "I want to show where our sounds come from, and how they keep moving through generations," she says. In 'SOUNDS', she shares that world with the audience.

What happens to your body when a bassline reverberates through your chest? When a rhythm moves your feet before you even realise it? In 'SOUNDS', that power of music takes centre stage. Four dancers and a singer show how sounds shape communities.

'SOUNDS' celebrates Afro-Caribbean heritage: music as a source of joy, connection and resilience. It echoes generations before, during and after the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, and shows how sound shapes and connects communities.

The foundation for 'SOUNDS' was laid through Lijn73. In co-creation sessions, Chittick worked alongside deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing dancers. At the festival, she shared the creative process with the audience on an open floor. What grew there can now be seen on stage.

Good to know

  • Light and vibrations make the music not only audible, but also visible and tangible. BackBone developed special vibration belts, rhythmic lighting and subtitles, so that deaf and hard-of-hearing audience members can feel what is happening on stage. In this way, 'SOUNDS' becomes what music in the Afro-Caribbean tradition has always been: something you share with everyone around you. Would you like to experience 'SOUNDS' with a vibration belt? About the artist

Hip-hop company BackBone makes dance that speaks to what is happening right now. The values of hip-hop form its foundation: intensity, authentic performance, movement with both feet firmly on the ground, and bold storytelling. Their productions are raw and profound, and prompt you to think about your own place in society. Alida Dors founded BackBone in 2012 and later moved on to Theater Rotterdam; since late 2022, Donna Chittick has been the artistic director. BackBone previously performed 'ALPH' [2021], 'Together' [2021] and 'Mirrors' [2023] at Boulevard.

"With infectious rhythms, sharp dancers, warm colours and sounds, BackBone's dance performance ‘SOUNDS’ effortlessly conjures up a whole world. On the breath of the piece, everything and everyone moves along."
