At four years old, Michelle David was already singing in a church in New York. At five, she took part in her first gospel choir. She toured as a backing vocalist with Joe Cocker, Gloria Gaynor and Chaka Khan, sang on records by Diana Ross, and gradually built a voice of her own that crosses boundaries between generations and audiences. With The True-Tones, she brings a show that begins with her own story and ends with that of everyone in the room.

Michelle David was singing before she could read. Gospel, soul, funk live in her voice the way memories live in the body. Together with The True-Tones, founded from the Gospel Sessions of musicians Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit, she made seven albums that defined her sound with ever greater clarity. Gospel as the foundation. Soul, funk, Afrobeat and R&B as the branches. And now 'Soul Woman': the newest and most personal album to date, about identity, healing and growth.

"How can I ask others to reflect on their lives, but not do it myself?" This quote from Michelle says it all. The music on 'Soul Woman' sounds timeless, but the urgency is very much of the present. On stage, that urgency translates into pure live energy: a band that draws you in, lifts you up and celebrates together with you. BBC Radio 6 Music named their album 'Truth & Soul' Album of the Year. An Edison nomination followed. As did appearances at major festivals Pinkpop and North Sea Jazz. But the true home of Michelle David & The True-Tones is on a stage, where the music belongs to everyone.

About the artist

Michelle David toured worldwide with Broadway productions and contributed to major theatre shows. Back in Europe, she co-founded The Gospel Sessions with musicians Paul Willemsen and Onno Smit, the forerunner of what would become Michelle David & The True-Tones. With seven studio albums and international festival appearances to their name, the band has grown into one of the most celebrated soul and gospel acts in Europe.

"From flirtatious Diana Ross vibes to deeply felt soul: Michelle David and her band show their versatility."

Volkskrant on 'Soul Woman'
