Theatre company Lost Dog tackles the age-old myth of Medea with a dose of light-heartedness and humour. Dancers effortlessly jump from spoken text to movement. Live music, from pop to opera, sweeps you from one moment to another. The result is ‘Ruination’ a performance of tension and comfort, that makes you laugh right before falling still. You leave the room with the feeling that a story you might have heard before suddenly looks a little different.

Those who have seen a performance by Lost Dog before know what to expect. A story everyone thinks they know, lifted from dusty books to be told as a story that happened yesterday. In ‘Ruination’, the full focus is on Medea.

Medea stands trial for the murder of her children. In the myth, the case is already closed: she is the villain. Choreographer Ben Duke puts her on trial in the Underworld, with Jason as prosecutor and Hades and Persephone as lawyers. In ‘Ruination’ the case runs for a second time. One where offender and victim are not as obvious as the myth told us for centuries. Who is the victim? Who gets a fair trial?

The performance will have its Dutch premier on Boulevard at Thursday the 6th of August.

About the artist

Lead by choreographer Ben Duke, the British theatre company Lost Dog creates performances in which famous stories fall under new ownership. Their versions of ‘Juliet and Romeo’, ‘Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me)’ and ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ toured Europe and have been showed at Boulevard before. ‘Ruination’ is a coproduction with the Royal Ballet (UK), played for sold-out venues in London and won the National Dance Award for the best modern choreography in 2022.

“The full cast of performers is superb, peeling in and out of character’s skins, between voice, movement and singing. Dance is used to complete meanings, to explode emotions, to carry the narrative forward with heartbreaking empathy.”

Gramilano

“Lost Dog’s fresh take on the myth of Medea is the real deal: a potent brew of dance, drama, music and glorious stage-scapes, with a GSOH to boot.”
