Omar Ka & Fula Band

The Fulani are the largest nomadic people in West Africa. Wherever they travelled, they carried their music with them. Omar Ka grew up in that tradition and brought it with him to Rotterdam. Together with his Fula Band, he guarantees an evening full of stories. Expect a blend of Tinariwen’s Sahara sound and the rhythms of Fela Kuti.

Omar Ka was born in Senegal, but his roots lie in Niger. You can hear these two worlds in his music: his voice and guitar playing reflect his Fulani heritage, while the beats of Dakar, reggae, and funk firmly anchor him in Senegal’s vibrant street music scene.
Together with his Fula Band, a close group of friends he has known since 1991, he combines Fulani folk with Afro-reggae, desert blues, and Dakar beats. Traditional West African instruments such as the kamale ngoni (an African harp) and the djembe can be heard alongside electric guitar, bass guitar, and drums. The result is music that feels both familiar and unlike anything you have heard before.
Omar Ka’s lyrics draw on the nomadic life he experienced as a child: nature, freedom, and the rich culture of the Fulani people. Rather than presenting a nostalgic picture, his songs offer poetic observations that resonate in the present day. Although the Fulani traditionally roamed across Cameroon, Niger, Mali, Guinea, Senegal, and Nigeria, their music has since travelled far beyond those borders and reached audiences around the world.
