Schweigman& is a familiar face at Boulevard. Their productions 'Eros' [2022] and 'Binnenste Buiten' [2024] sold out every time. This summer, the company returns with a landscape of ten tonnes of clay and five hundred litres of water. 'Klei' lets you feel what it is like to be part of something larger than yourself. How vulnerable and powerful a body can be when it surrenders to the earth.

Welcome to 'Klei', where Schweigman& performers literally surrender to the earth. Visual artist Zoro Feigl created a landscape of clay that splashes, sticks and falls apart. Feigl built a clay landscape that moves, takes shape and disintegrates again. Five performers step into it as if setting foot on an unknown planet. They sink into the mud, climb back out, let themselves be buried and resurface. At times the clay seems to embrace them; at others, they disappear into it entirely. You see how heavy it is, how slippery and how unpredictable. You see the weight, the struggle and the surrender.

As the performers move through the clay, HIIIT plays the ceramic instruments created by sound artist Gemma Luz Bosch. For years she listened to the sound of clay, discovering which vibrations and textures it holds. Several of the instruments she built for this purpose can now be heard in 'Klei'.

"This time calls for coming together, for listening to what wants to be heard and felt from the deeper layers of our existence. How do we learn again to listen to the signals of our body and of the earth?" — Boukje Schweigman

Schweigman& believes in the power of experiencing without judgement. The company's productions are not stories you follow, but worlds you enter. For 'Klei', they sought collaboration with makers who think in the same way: Zoro Feigl, known for sculptures that come to life, and HIIIT, who push boundaries in rhythm and sound.

Good to know

  • At certain moments the sound is loud. The musicians are positioned among the audience. Depending on where you are seated, the sound may feel very close.
  • The company provides sunglasses for protection against the light. If you would like to use them, please let us know at the reception for the performance.

About the artist

Schweigman& creates performances that awaken your senses. Not stories with a beginning and an end, but spaces where you learn to see anew. Zoro Feigl builds moving sculptures from materials such as rubber, canvas and fire hoses. Nature is an important source of inspiration for his work. Sound artist Gemma Luz Bosch is inspired by sounds and movements that already exist. Using these sounds, she creates site-specific installations and concerts. Percussion group HIIIT explores boundaries, driven by rhythm and a curiosity for every sound that can be made.

"Schweigman guides humanity through the world in the hour that follows. The whirlwind spins in light by Julian Maiwald. They learn what the earth gives them and celebrate the successful existence of their kind."

Theaterkrant *****

"Tirelessly, three performers dive, glide and dance in the resistant clay."
