In 2013, three Belgian choreographers created 'Badke', a performance featuring ten Palestinian dancers, rooted in the Palestinian folk dance dabke. More than ten years later, Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab — dancers in the original production — take over the direction. They rework the piece, mixing in hip-hop, capoeira and contemporary dance, and determine what their folk dance has to say today. The performance becomes 'Badke(remix)'.

Amir Sabra and Ata Khatab take the traditional folk dance, as performed at weddings and other celebrations, as their starting point and transform it. The Palestinian dancers bring a contemporary version of this traditional dance: a merging of joy, expression and togetherness and they literally reverse the letters, dabke becomes 'Badke(remix)'.

The music that belongs to it is the mijwiz, an energetic style of dabke music. In 'Badke(remix)', an electronic version of this musical form is used. At moments, sirens, drones and crying children break through. The reality in which these dancers live flickers briefly into the celebration. But they do not stop. That is the core of 'Badke(remix)': we are here and we will not be driven away. We dance until we drop.

About the artist

laGeste is a Ghent-based company that creates productions in which the body takes centre stage: raw, visual and unsettling. The company works with a changing roster of artists on ambitious projects and invests in young and driven talent. Their practice is radically inclusive: intergenerational, intercultural, and with space for artists and dancers with disabilities.

"'Badke(remix)' is not a performance you watch calmly and analyse afterwards. Those who watch feel the pulse, the repetition, the breathlessness. It is hard not to move along."
