Workshop A True Story

Subtitle video

Hello everybody. My name is Daniel Mariblanca and I am the artistic director of 71BODIES. 71BODIES is a transgender inclusive dance performance company based in Bergen, Norway. This year we’re really happy, because we’re going to bring our latest work: A True Story, to Boulevard festival. A True Story is a work, inspired in transgender childhood, transgender youth, transgender parenthood, and family relationships. And we will have our Dutch premiere the 12th and 13th of august.

Before that we will have a workshop on the 9th, 10th and 11th. I will give this workshop with Lux Sauer. A friend of mine and we will have a lot of fun. We’re going to dance, we’re going to have some writing sessions, we’re going to paint something. And for sure we’re going to create a place for important things to be expressed.

So, if you are a transgender person or a queer person, a dancer, a choreographer, a visual artist. Or you are the parent, the friend or the partner of a transgender person this is your workshop! So enroll yourself trough Boulevard, or you can DM me on Instagram, Daniel Mariblanca or 71BODIES. So I see you all there and now I will like to show you what’s behind my head. See you there!

Choreographer Daniel Mariblanca and Theaterfestival Boulevard invite you to celebrate being trans, queer, identity and uniqueness!

Prior to the performance A True Story Daniel will give a 3-day workshop in which he creates an environment with the participants, in which they can celebrate important parts of their transition process, queer identity, creativity and uniqueness through multiple artforms with dance and movement as center.

Together with Daniel and the other participants you get to work in a workshop where dance and movement are central. In addition to applying a multifaceted approach to expression, he will also share key insights and techniques developed during the production time of A True Story . This performance will have its Dutch premiere at Boulevard on 12 and 13 August 2023.

As a bonus offering to the workshop, participants are welcome to take part (if they want to) in one of the performances in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Experience is not necessary. We believe that every body can dance! All bodies, physicalities, functionalities and abilities are welcome.

It is only important that you feel comfortable with being (or becoming) visible and to be able to freely experience something new, yet important. There is methodology to the process, but not strict choreography to learn. Every age is welcome to participate. By yourself or with a friend or relative.

Daniel: “We, transgender people, cannot transition alone. We need the entire society to transition with us. For this we need to hear and consider all sides of the story. The essence of A True Story is to create around the complexity of all experiences; not only of the transgender person, but also how the family experiences the gender transition of their child, parent, partner or friend.”

If you are interested in participating, Daniel would like to meet you through a video call. You can ask questions and share ideas about what this workshop can be. All questions are valid!

If you are interested in participating, sign up with Coralie den Adel: coralie@festivalboulevard.nl. If you have any questions send a message. All practical information will be provided after registration.

"When fighting for visibility and fair representation of marginalized groups it's important to do it through something you feel passionate about, so that you don't exhaust yourself in the effort and can endure the battle for years. It's through dance I can find the energy and the meaning to continue fighting to remove stigma and generate other narratives, fictions, and new possibilities of how the future can be. Dance and performance are the central axis to our artistic expression and they give us the space to connect with our bodies and minds in a deeper way as well as connecting with the world." Daniel Mariblanca, Artistic Director of 71BODIES.
