A sustainable festival

The last few years, we have consciously been working on measures to make the festival more sustainable. Whichever way you look at it: a festival costs electricity, water and other raw materials, causes transport movements – of both audience and artists – and produces waste streams. We want to moderate that as much as possible, while also looking for alternatives.

This year we will receive observers from Green Key who will see if we can receive the Green Key quality mark. Green Key is the international quality mark for sustainable companies, particularly in the recreation and leisure sector and the hospitality industry. They assess all kinds of aspects, from communication, cleaning and energy to sustainable purchasing and textiles. The Green Key quality mark shows that you are going one step further in terms of sustainability. The quality mark has three different levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Depending on the number of sustainable measures, you will receive a certificate that fits. For Boulevard, choosing a sustainable option is quite normal and the Green Key quality mark is therefore a good way to see where we stand.

Boulevard can proudly say that the GOLD level has been achieved in 2023.

This is no reason to sit still; on the contrary, it encourages our organization to continue investing in sustainability for the festival. With 28 of the 43 optional standards already achieved, the festival continues to develop in the field of sustainability.

Pepijn Muller, sustainability coordinator of Boulevard: “In these times when we are more aware of the world around us, it is essential that we are aware of the impact of our festival on our natural environment. It is our responsibility to deal with that fact as best as possible.”

“Not only is this a recognition of our commitment to sustainability, but also an incentive to continue investing. Our continued development in sustainability, with 28 of the 43 optional standards achieved, reflects our commitment to a greener future,” said directors Tessa Smeulers and Dana Kibbelaar.
